On September 4 at the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister YU In Chon, MCST), in collaboration with LG Electronics, hosted the “Night of the Artists”. This event, run as part of the “Korea Art Festival,” aimed to nurture exchange between the domestic and international art communities. Minister YU In Chon attended, engaging with leading figures in the art world and representatives of various corporate sponsors, reaffirming his ministry’s active support for extending the global reach of Korean art and artists.

1st World Webtoon Festival and Award Ceremony to Be Hosted in Korea, the Country Where Webtoons Originated

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister YU In Chon, MCST) plans to host the World Webtoon Festival 2024 from September 26 (Thursday) to 29 (Sunday) in Seongsu-dong, Seoul in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government (Mayor OH Se Hoon), the Korea Creative Content Agency (Acting Director Yoo Hyun Seok), and the Seoul Business Agency (CEO KIM Hyun Woo). On September 26, the first day of the festival, the World Webtoon Awards 2024 will be also held.

2024 Seoul International Writers’ Festival, A Global Gathering of Renowned Literary Writers

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister YU In Chon, MCST) and the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (President CHON Soo Young, LTI Korea) will co-host the 2024 Seoul International Writers Festival (SIWF) at the JCC Art Center in Jongno, Seoul from September 6 to 11. Since 2006, the SIWF has served as a key platform for writers around the world to connect with their readers.

In celebration of the arrival of autumn and its abundant harvest, a variety of events—at libraries, book streets, and even military bases—are planned to celebrate the joy of reading. Despite a decline in leisure reading among South Korean citizens, the importance of books cannot be overstated. Reading fosters essential skills such as critical thinking and empathy in an era defined by artificial intelligence (AI) and hyper-personalization. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister YU In Chon, MCST) is partnering with over 2,600 institutions, organizations, and companies to rediscover the value of books and promote a culture of reading through more than 10,704 diverse events throughout September "Reading Month."

MCST and Prosecutors Arrested Operator of Korea's Largest Illegal Web Novel-Sharing Site

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister YU In Chon, MCST) in a joint operation with the Daejeon District Prosecutors Office (DDPO) (Chief Prosecutor SEONG Sang Heon) has arrested the suspected operator of the “Agitoon” website, a major illegal distributor of web novels and webtoons for over three years. The site was immediately shut down following the apprehension of the alleged culprit.
