The MCST to Mark 2023 as the First Year of “Korea–US Cultural Partnership” to Expand Cultural Cooperation

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Korea–US alliance, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) will mark 2023 as the first year of “Korea–US Cultural Partnership,” launching cultural exchange and cooperation efforts between the two countries. “2023 will be the first year in which culture serves as a key link and crucial driving force for the Global Comprehensive Strategic Alliance between Korea and the US,” said MCST Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, adding, “I am confident that the ‘Korea–US Cultural Partnership’ will further advance the alliance between the two countries that share the universal values of freedom and solidarity, regarded as one of the most successful alliances in history, and drastically expand the scope of collaboration and exchange between the two countries.”

On March 19 (Sun), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) announced its plan to launch the Korea–Japan Future Cultural Partnership Project along with other projects across various sectors to promote cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Japan–Republic of Korea Joint Declaration 1998 (KIM Dae Jung–Obuchi Declaration), which lifted the previous ban on the import of Japanese cultural products to Korea, and the 20th anniversary of NHK’s airing of Winter Sonata, one of the first Korean TV shows to gain a large following in Japan. The ministry will celebrate these momentous events by strengthening the foundation of K-culture in Japan, and organizing and conducting systematic efforts to support exchange and collaboration programs between the two countries’ younger generations (often called the “MZ”[1] generation in Korea).

6070 Storytelling Artists (Storytelling Grandmas) to Compete in “Storytelling Battle” entertainment program

“The 6070 Storytelling Artists (Storytelling Grandmas)” are set to test their storytelling skills in a competition where the winner will be given a chance to go on a national tour with her tales. Starting this year, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) and the Korean Studies Institute (Director JEONG Jong-seop, KSI) will reform and expand the “6070 Storytelling artists (Storytelling Grandmas)” program to meet elderly citizens’ needs for cultural participation and help them become leading actors in the artistic creation field.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) hosts the 2023 conference joined by the Overseas Korean Cultural Center Director and Cultural Promotion officials at the KOCIS Center (Seoul) from March 14 (Tue) to 17 (Fri). The conference was joined by 28 Korean Cultural Center directors and five Cultural Promotion officials who promoted and raised awareness on Korean culture (K-culture) in 29 countries worldwide.

The MCST to join FILMART in Hong Kong, rekindling the export of K-dramas and variety shows to the Greater China region

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (President Jo Hyun-rae, KOCCA) joined FILMART[1] in Hong Kong from March 13 (Mon) to 16 (Thur). On this year’s FILMART, which was held face-to-face for the first time in four years, the ministry opened the Korea Pavilion to rekindle the export of Korean TV dramas and variety shows to the Greater China region.
