UM GALLERY는 송현주 작가의 개인전 《Play, Pause, Assemble》을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 작가가 지난 몇 년간 지속해온 회화적 탐구의 연장선에서, 신작과 주요 구작을 함께선보이며 작업 세계의 구조적 특징을 입체적으로 조망합니다.

송현주는 유년기부터 익숙했던 프라모델과 밀리터리 키트의 조립 과정을 형상 언어로 변환하여, 전쟁의 이미지를 설계하고 재구성하는 회화를 구축해 왔습니다. 작가는 전투기, 탱크, 군함 등의 군사 오브제를 해체하고 다시 조립하듯이, 파편화된 이미지와 회화적 표면을 병치하며 새로운 시각적 질서를 만듭니다. 이러한 과정은 전쟁을 단지 역사적 사건이 아닌, 시각적으로 소비된 이미지의 구조로 바라보는 작가의 태도를 반영합니다.

전시는 약 20여 점의 작품으로 구성되며, 각각의 화면은 평면 위에 조립된 감각의 설계도이자, 감상자에게는 시선과 기억을 다시 조립해보도록 요청하는 구조적 제안으로 기능합니다. 장난감처럼 친숙하지만 낯선 파편들이 구성하는 시각적 구조는, 폭력과 질서, 놀이와 전술 사이의 긴장을 회화적으로 사유하게 합니다.

UM GALLERY is pleased to present 《Play, Pause, Assemble》, a solo exhibition by Song Hyunju. This exhibition brings together both recent and selected earlier works to trace the structural continuity of the artist’s painterly inquiry over the past several years.

Song Hyunju builds his visual language through the process of assembling and reassembling images of war, drawing on childhood memories of plastic model kits and military toys. Fighter jets, tanks, and warships―objects often associated with both destruction and play―are disassembled into fragments and rearranged on the pictorial surface. His paintings juxtapose mechanical precision and painterly gesture, confronting viewers with reconstructed fields of vision that blend schematic logic with perceptual dissonance.

Rather than portraying war as an historical event, Song examines it as a mediated image―circulated, consumed, and reconstructed. His compositions do not seek to reenact violence, but instead explore how the visual language of warfare has become embedded in the aesthetics of play, nostalgia, and mass media.

Comprised of approximately 20 works, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with paintings as conceptual blueprints―flattened fields of sensation and memory. In these layered constructions, the tension between violence and order, play and control becomes a terrain for critical reflection and visual reassembly.
