전시소개

이승현 작가가 그린 풍경에서 하늘의 비중은 커졌다. 공간의 대부분이 푸른색을 중심으로 다양한 색이 어울려 깊이감이 더해진다. 밤낮의 구별도 보이지만 반짝임이 강조되면서 하늘은 그 너머의 이야기를 들려주려 한다. 있는 것을 알지만 경험이 쉽지 않은 미지의 영역이라 불리는 그곳을 끌어들이면서 평면 안은 상상의 공간으로 변화되기 시작한다. 문득 떠오른 기억을 확인하는 형태로서 매개체처럼 하늘은 표현된다. 한눈에 들어오는 편안한 시선이 조용한 분위기를 연출하지만 뭔가 일어날 것만 같은 암시적인 성격도 있다. 유년시절의 기억이 가져다준 별과 하늘을 그려 보면서 추억을 되새기는 장면구성으로 아름다움은 개인의 역사로 이어진다. 인생의 여러 시간 속에 자아와 기억을 공간 안에 색으로 다층적 의미로 끄집어낸다.

기억과 시간, 자신의 경험이 어떻게 개인의 인생과 연관되는지 특히나 예술가로서 자신을 들여다보는 계기로 최근의 풍경은 나타난다. 인물이 축소되고 사물과 자연이 만나며 드러나는 공간들, 때로는 추상적으로 표현되는 하늘은 보이지 않는 것들을 구체화하려는 노력의 결과물로 정신지향적인 성격이 강하다. 기억이 감성으로 변화되면서 순간을 찾으려는 마르셀 프루스트의 ‘잃어버린 시간을 찾아서’처럼 시간 여행을 하며 자신을 돌아본다. 화면 중심에 반짝이는 별빛을 색채로 비중 있게 그려 넣음으로써 그림 안은 좀 더 많은 이야기를 전해준다. 우주라는 주제로 다층화된 시점이 과학적인 세계관도 연결시키지만 결국 작가가 말하고픈 것은 인간 중심적 사고에서 태어난 결론 내지 못하는 열린 결말의 내용일 것이다. 지구라는 별 하나가 우주의 수백억 년 사이에 한점 티클처럼 짧은 역사 속에 엄청난 문명을 이루어 놓은 진실들을 인정하면서 그 안을 거쳐간 사람들을 생각하며 앞으로도 살아갈 미래를 장면 안에 포함시킨다. 본인 또한 그 안에 이입되면서 겸손한 자세로 세상을 관찰하려 한다.

우리가 지금 어느 방향이든 흐르는 시간 속에서 무심히 하늘을 바라봤을 때 아득함과 경외감이 드는 이유는 별들이 몇백 광년 전에 발산된 빛을 여기서 보게 되는, 머나먼 시공의 거리감을 느끼는 탓도 있겠지만 닫힌 현실을 살아가는 삶 속에 시간을 마음대로 하지 못한다는 생각이 더욱 하늘을 동경하며 무한 상상을 하게 만들었는지도 모를 일이다. 가보지 못한 영역, 그 안에 벌어질 일들을 꿈꾸며 인간은 욕망을 실현해 왔지만 그래도 실현되지 못한 것들을 안타까운 마음으로 바라보게 되는 기억이 자리하기에 인간은 여전히 예술로서 또는 과학으로 어떤 걸 발전시킨다. 인간이 좌표 안의 특정한 지점을 시간 안에서 경험하게 되는 사건들에 비한다면 우주의 역사는 엄청나다. 별들의 생애에 비해 지구에서 보내는 우리의 시간은 아주 많이 짧은 편이다. 상대적이며 절대적인 거리를 좁히기 위한 노력이 상상으로 만날 때 미지의 공간은 무엇을 만들어 낼 것인가. 잠시나마 평면에서 축약적이지만 거리의 확장을 희망한다. 어느 순간 만나고픈 인물을 생각하며 살며시 그려 넣는다.

In Seung-Hyun Lee's landscapes, the prominence of the sky has grown. The majority of the space is dominated by shades of blue, complemented by various other colors that add depth. The distinction between day and night is evident, but the emphasis on twinkling lights suggests a narrative beyond what is visible. By incorporating the unknown, which is acknowledged but difficult to experience, the flat surface transforms into a realm of imagination. The sky is depicted as a medium for revisiting fleeting memories. The soothing view creates a serene atmosphere, yet there is an underlying suggestion that something might happen. By drawing stars and the sky, reminiscent of childhood memories, the composition evokes nostalgia, linking beauty to personal history. Throughout various moments in life, the artist extracts layers of meaning through color, reflecting the self and memories within the space.

The recent landscapes illustrate how memory, time, and personal experiences intertwine with one's life, serving as a means for the artist to introspect. As figures diminish, spaces where objects and nature converge emerge, sometimes with an abstractly depicted sky, aiming to materialize the unseen. This effort results in a highly introspective character. As memories morph into emotions, the artist embarks on a journey of self-reflection akin to Marcel Proust's "In Search of Lost Time." By prominently painting twinkling starlight at the center of the canvas, the artwork conveys a richer narrative. The multifaceted perspective of the universe also ties into a scientific worldview, but ultimately, the artist seeks to communicate an open-ended conclusion born from anthropocentric thinking. Acknowledging the immense civilization built on Earth, a tiny speck in the vast history of billions of years of the universe, the artist contemplates the people who have traversed this path and includes the future within the scene. The artist, too, immerses in this, observing the world with a humble attitude.

When we gaze up at the sky in any direction amidst the flowing time, the sense of vastness and awe we feel may stem from witnessing light emitted from stars hundreds of light-years away, making us aware of the immense temporal distance. Living in a confined reality, the inability to control time might intensify our yearning for the sky and boundless imagination. Dreaming of unexplored territories and the events that might unfold within them, humans have pursued their desires, yet unfulfilled aspirations are viewed with a sense of regret. This persistent longing drives humanity to advance through art or science. Compared to the events we experience within specific coordinates in time, the history of the universe is immense. Our time on Earth is exceedingly brief compared to the lifespan of stars. When efforts to bridge relative and absolute distances meet imagination, what will the unknown space create? Even if briefly, the hope for expanded distances on a flat surface arises. The artist subtly incorporates a figure they wish to meet someday, thinking of them as they gently paint.
