The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister CHAE Hwi-young, MCST), in collaboration with the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), will host the opening ceremony for Korea’s largest virtual studio at Studio Cube in Daejeon, on December 3 (Wednesday). MCST First Vice Minister Kim Young-soo will attend the opening ceremony to tour the production site with its latest technology and encourage stakeholders.
Introducing In-Camera VFX technology: a cutting-edge production system combining real sets and virtual backgrounds
The new virtual studio is set to unveil a cutting-edge production system that seamlessly integrates physical sets, featuring an ultra-large, domestically produced LED wall measuring 60 meters in length and 8 meters in height, with virtual environments produced by 3D graphics technology in real-time. By rendering virtual backdrops onto the LED wall, which are synchronized in real-time with camera movements, producers can capture immersive, three-dimensional scenes live on set.
Beyond a simple facility introduction, the opening ceremony will also include a live demonstration of In-Camera VFX (ICVFX)[1] technology, highlighting its significance in the industry. Participants will witness the full workflow of how footage captured on site is instantly translated into production content, experiencing firsthand a new production paradigm where virtual and physical worlds merge within the virtual studio environment. Moreover, demonstrations will allow guests to experience recreated moments of the past that blend tradition and modernity, as well as be virtually transported to iconic cities around the world.
Studio Cube reborn as Korea’s only multi-purpose studio capable of conventional, water-based, and virtual filming
With the completion of the virtual studio, Studio Cube has been transformed into a single multi-purpose studio that supports conventional, water-based, and virtual filming, with the upgraded facility expected to play a central role as a creative hub for K-content. Production companies are expected to drastically reduce the costs and time previously required for overseas location shoots and post-production by leveraging this state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Through the Virtual Studio Pilot Operation Program[2], MCST plans to provide integrated support for production companies, including access to facilities, equipment, and technical specialists. The Ministry also will run a Virtual Studio Practical Utilization Master Class for professionals in the broadcast and media content sectors, including producers, cinematographers, and lighting crews, to expand the talent pipeline from December 4 to 8.
“The opening of this new virtual studio will empower broadcast and media content producers to leverage cutting-edge production facilities to present more competitive content in the global market,” said First Vice Minister Kim Young-soo. “MCST will continue to provide comprehensive support across every stage of the production industry, ranging from planning and development to production, overseas expansion, and professional training, based on foundational facilities like the virtual studio.”
