Firmly established as the country’s premier hanbok convention event, the Hanbok Expo marks its eighth year as the only expo dedicated to hanbok, or the traditional clothes of Korea. This year’s event is the largest ever, with 150 hanbok brands showcasing and promoting their products. Visitors can enjoy discounts of up to 80% on all products, ranging from traditional and daily hanbok to fabrics, daenggi (traditional Korean ribbon), norigae (decorative hanbok pendant), and tteoljam (hairpieces and hair ornaments).
An Integrated Cultural Showcase of Hanbok: Shops, Experiences, and Exhibitions in One Place
Opening Ceremony to Take Place August 7 at 2:00 PM
This year’s Hanbok Expo will be hosted under the theme “Hanbok with Four Seasons (四季之樂)” to celebrate the beauty and meaning of hanbok across the four seasons. The multifaceted cultural event will combine shopping, hands-on experiences, and exhibitions where visitors can appreciate the traditional attire of Korea.
In the Special Exhibition Hall, the “Textures of Four Seasons” exhibition will draw a poetic parallel between the changes of the four seasons and the journey of a lifetime. The exhibit will spotlight Korea’s rich attire culture, from ceremonial garments worn in childhood years to outfits for diamond (60th) wedding anniversaries, through traditional seasonal fabrics—myeongju (fine silk) for spring, mosi (ramie) for summer, sukgosa (refined silk) for autumn, and nubi (quilted cotton) for winter. The exhibit will feature over 170 pieces across 60 full dresses. The exhibition will also showcase live textile craftmanship demonstrations of fabric production using both traditional and modern looms.
The opening ceremony will take place on August 7 (Thursday) at 2:00 PM. The ceremony will include an awards ceremony for the public competition Hanbok Design Project and a fashion show linked to the special exhibition. Famous actors JUNG Il-woo and KWON Yuri will make a special appearance on the runway, showcasing the elegance and beauty of traditional hanbok across different seasons.
The Promotion Pavilion will showcase a variety of hanbok-related initiatives, including the award-winning designs (30 pieces) of new designers from the Hanbok Design Project, innovative workplace adaptations across various professions to promote daily hanbok culture, and educational content from the Hanbok Mareumbang curriculum, a training program dedicated to hanbok designers. Activities will include hanbok-making workshops and traditional game challenges with the Hanbok Pungnyudan performance group.
Free Admission for Visitors Pre-Registered (by August 6) or Wearing Hanbok
More details on the Expo are available on the official Hanbok Expo website (www.kcdf.or.kr/hanbokexpo). General admission is KRW 5,000. However, visitors wearing hanbok or who have registered in advance may enter the venue for free. Pre-registration will remain open until August 6 (Wednesday) via the website.
“Hanbok continues to gain global attention as a symbol of Korean tradition and beauty through its appearance in various K-content,” said Deputy Minister LEE Jung-woo of the Culture and Arts Policy Office at MCST. “We hope this expo encourages more people to embrace Hanbok not only on special occasions but also as part of their everyday lives.”
