The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister YU In Chon, MCST) announced that the 144 athletes of Korean delegation participating in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics concluded with outstanding results.

The team Korea for the Paris Olympics was the smallest since the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, raising concerns about the final performance even before the games began. However, despite the small size, the team won a total of 32 medals—13 gold, 9 silver, and 10 bronze—finishing top 8th. This marks the best performance in terms of total medal count since the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Our athletes also shined in specific events. The archery team swept all five events, with the women’s team securing their 10th consecutive victory. In fencing, the men’s sabre team dominated both individual and team events, achieving their first double crown. Notably, the team event victory marked their third consecutive win, following triumphs in the London 2012 Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. There was no sabre team event in Rio 2016 Olympics.

In badminton, Korea claimed its first singles gold medal in 28 years and a silver in mixed doubles after 16 years. In table tennis, the women’s team won a medal after 16 years, and the mixed doubles after 12 years. Shooting saw both new and veteran athletes winning medals, surpassing the previous best performance from the London 2012 Olympics to achieve the highest results in the nation’s Olympic history. Taekwondo reaffirmed its status as the birthplace of the sport with 2 golds and 1 bronze. The weightlifting team set a new national record in women's weightlifting, earning a silver medal, and swimming secured its first medal in 12 years. Additionally, the team earned its first-ever medals in women’s boxing and women’s modern pentathlon, and also medaled in the newly introduced mixed team judo event at the Paris Olympics, among other significant achievements.

Moreover, even in events where no medals were won, all participating athletes in Team Korea  inspired and brought joy to the nation by giving their all in every competition. After 17-day odyssey, the Korean team safely concluded their participation in the Paris Olympics.

All athletes competed in 2024 Paris are heroes; Government to provide continued support  beyond athletic careers

Minister YU stated, “I had no doubt our team would excel in the Olympics. I’m proud of our athletes for their outstanding performance on the world’s biggest stage, where the best compete.” He added, “Even after the Olympics, we will ensure that our athletes can fully dedicate themselves to their training while also carefully considering policies to support their lives beyond their athletic careers.”

Vice Minister JANG Mi Ran commented, “I believe every one of our athletes is a hero, not only those who won medals but also those who gave their all from preparation to competition. We will continue to make every effort to support our athletes as they pursue their dreams on the global stage.”
