“2023 Korea Young Architect Award,” Given to Four Winners from Three Teams
Date Jul 14, 2023
- More Less Architects, kimnam Architects, and AGIT STUDIO were selected
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST), along with the Korea Architects Institute, the Korean Institute of Architects (KIA), and the Korean Institute of Female Architects, selected the winners of the “2023 Korea Young Architect Award.” The four recipients come from three teams, More Less Architects (Chief Architect KIM Young Soo), kimnam Architects (Cofounders KIM Jin Hyu and NAM Ho Jin), and AGIT STUDIO (Director SEO Ja Min).
A total of 46 teams applied for this competition and the winners were determined through the first document review and the second public audio-visual presentation. The judging committee (Chairperson LEE Min Ah) comprehensively evaluated the potential capabilities and social roles of an architect, novel concepts and completeness of the works, awareness of the problem, and creative problem-solving abilities.
Evaluation summaries for the “2023 Korea Young Architect Award” winners
• More Less Architects (KIM Young Soo) - Selected as this year’s notable architect, he meticulously explores and contemplates the essence of architecture, such as the inherent qualities of materials, the positioning of architectural elements, and the relationship between objects and spaces. He rigorously coordinates dimensions based on careful reasoning and skillfully exercises authority on-site, overseeing the construction process with precision. His efforts and attitude in striving for perfection are anticipated to be sincerely appreciated and shared in this era.
• kimnam Architects (KIM Jin Hyu, NAM Ho Jin) - By defining and rigorously structuring beauty through intangible aspects, one can reflect that the path toward beauty is only reached when accompanied by the builders’ toil, the users’ delight, and the architect’s self-censorship. This approach strongly poses the question, “Ultimately, what is the architect dedicated to?”
• AGIT STUDIO (SEO Ja Min) - The work process of sensitively embracing urban issues as clues for generating design intentions goes beyond the young architect’s unique narrative and presents a clear stance on the fundamental vocabulary of architecture, such as mass, structure, void, scale, texture, and more. In doing so, it challenges the impoverished discourse within the established architecture industry, possibly serving as a message that questions and delivers a message. |
MCST has been awarding the “Young Architect Award” since 2008 to discover and nurture outstanding new architects. Architects selected as “Young Architects” are awarded the Minister’s Award and are provided with various opportunities, such as holding art exhibitions, publishing a collection of works, and participating in domestic and international architectural events.
The award ceremony will be held on October 25 (Wed) at the “KIA Convention & Exhibition 2023 (Culture Station Seoul 284),” and the winners’ works will also be presented.
