The Storytelling Grandma Day celebration on December 7 was streamed online
The 2022 Storytelling Grandma (Silver Storytelling Artist)[1] Day celebration was held on December 7 at the Lee Byeong-hyeong Hall of the War Memorial of Korea jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) and the Korean Studies Institute (Director JEONG Jong-seop, KSI). The event shared the achievements of the project participants scheduled to complete their activities and sent support for those newly undertaking the task after their training. This celebration was streamed via YouTube[2] to minimize on-site attendees to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The activity completion ceremony for the Storytelling Grandmas who retired after their five-year and ten-year terms and the training completion ceremony for the new participants who will start taking their predecessors’ posts from next year after a year of training also took place during the celebration.
All 361 retirees presented with appreciation plaques from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Park Jae-suk (4th class), Won Chung-hee (5th class), Seon Seong-suk (6th class), and Park Ja-yeon (9th class) among them will be presented with the Achievement Award (Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendation). The 870 Storytelling Grandma trainees, who have completed 60 hours of training, received completion certificates, and 17 among them who have shown distinctive performance were presented with the Superior Performance Award.
The Storytelling Grandma (Silver Storytelling Artist) Project was first launched in 2009 with 30 trainees. This year marks the project’s 14th anniversary. This project is evaluated to have contributed to expanding the social engagement of the older generations, while also stimulating the interest of the younger generations in traditional culture. The Storytelling Grandma Day celebration began in 2019.
This year, over 3,000 Storytelling Grandmas have engaged in storytelling activities at 8,600 educational institutions for young children. Next year, about 4,000 Storytelling Grandmas will be narrating stories for preschoolers across the nation.
