Date May 20, 2022
Minister PARK Bo Gyoon took office as the new Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) on May 13, 2022 (Fri). Minister PARK’s inauguration ceremony was held at 3 p.m. at the MCST, Government Complex Sejong. In his inauguration address, Minister PARK stressed, “The leading nation cannot be achieved with economic and military strength alone, but also requires cultural influence on the global stage. Korea has now laid the foundation for its path toward being ‘a globally sought-after cultural powerhouse.’”
During his speech, PARK stated that designing a cultural policy should begin with knowing and understanding the world of culture and its people. Policies can thrive only when they arise from bottom-up communication and shared understanding. His remarks underlined that creating cultural contents needs historical truth and common sense without giving in to the temptation of shading history with a subjective viewpoint or a prejudiced perspective.
Citing "the rediscovery of the value of freedom” reiterated by President YOON Suk Yeol in his inauguration remarks, Minister PARK also said that the free imagination and freedom of expression are essential for the development of cultural policies.
He went on to say that it is necessary to build a country truly led by the people, which makes everyone with or without disabilities to have a fair and equitable access to and enjoy culture, arts, sports and tourism without any barriers.
After the ceremony, Minister PARK held a meeting with the heads of MCST public organizations and agencies at the Ministry, Sejong Government Complex.
