[Nov] ‘ISLAND’ presents catchy tune about Dokdo

Date Nov 02, 2021

“Standing right on the East Sea / Shining bright when I see ya / Every day and night / We’re getting closer / Now I can feel you.”

The music video “ISLAND – Dokdo, Beautiful Island of Korea” begins with a catchy tune and English lyrics sung by K-pop star Lee So-jung from the girl group Ladies’ Code.

The Northeast Asian History Foundation (NAHF) released the YouTube music video five days before Dokdo Day (October 25) to mark the occasion. It is Korea’s latest effort to promote the scenic views on and around its easternmost islets to younger Koreans and overseas audiences.

The video is filled with dynamic drone shots covering every nook and cranny of Dokdo as well as the blue waves lapping against its rocks and islets. The scenes of ridges, valleys and cliffs shining brightly under the sun are accompanied by Lee’s husky voice and the refined melody of singer-songwriter Jung Mina’s gayageum – Korea’s traditional 12-string zither.

“I was surprised that a track about Dokdo could have such pop and R&B elements,” Lee said during a press conference held at the NAHF’s headquarters in Seoul.

“To me, Dokdo looked majestic and beautiful but also a little lonely. I hope that the song and the music video can help promote the island within and outside of Korea.”
